Welcome to Mesquite Pediatrics!  Thanks for stopping by the home of Dr. Mary Cochran and Dr. Jeff Couchman.  Our goal is to provide comprehensive pediatric care in a warm, friendly environment.  If you have ideas of how we can better accomplish this, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Flu Vaccine Update

(Updated 12/24/2009):  We currently have injectable flu vaccine of both seasonal flu and H1N1 flu for all ages.  We also have some nasal vaccine for H1N1.  We are currently scheduling appointments for the vaccine over the next few weeks.  Call us if you want to schedule.

H1N1 Vaccine Recalls

There have now been 2 recalls of H1N1 vaccines.  The first was announced on 12/15 and was on a few lots of injectable vaccine for children 6 months to 3 years of age.  We have confirmed that this first recall does NOT affect any of the vaccines that we have had at our office.  If you have a child under 3 who received the vaccine at another location, they should have given you a card with the lot number of the vaccine written on it.  Follow the link below for information on which lots were recalled:

The second recall was announced on 12/22 and does affect some of the vaccine that we have had in our office.  Several lots of the nasal spray vaccine were recalled because, over time, their potency dropped out of the ideal range.  If your child was given a nasal spray H1N1 flu vaccine at our office before or during our Saturday clinic on Halloween, their vaccine was from one of the recalled lots.  This is NOT a safety recall, so there is no danger to your child.  Also, the problem was that the vaccines lost potency over time and we gave out all of our doses within a week of them arriving at our office.  Therefore, the vaccine should have had good potency at the time it was given and your child should have good protection from the vaccine, so there is nothing that needs to be done as a result of the recall.  Follow the link below for more information on the nasal spray recall:

Nasal Flu Vaccine Info:  For children over 2 years of age, the nasal form is a good option to consider when we have it in stock.  If your child is 2 years of age or older and does not have any chronic illnesses or immune system problems, he or she is probably a good candidate for the vaccine.  It is very safe and effective (it actually provides better immunity than the injection).  Click HERE for a document containing more information on the nasal versus injectable forms of the vaccine.  Several of our staff have chosen to use the nasal form for themselves and/or their children.  If you want to read the vaccine information sheets provided by the CDC on these vaccines, click the appropriate link below:

ATTENTION:  Verbal abuse of our staff over this or any other issue is NOT ACCEPTABLE!  We have had numerous calls from parents who have been very inappropriate and hostile with our receptionists due to the shortage of appointments for this vaccine.  The fact that we have very few doses of flu vaccines is something over which we have NO control.  We are doing the best we can with this very limited resource.  Anyone who calls and is hostile with any of our staff risks getting themselves and their children removed from our practice.  We understand that this is a very emotional time and there is a great deal of unnecessary panic out there, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Due to the success of our first 2 years, we have decided that we can be open to newborns only.  We are not able to accept patients who are transferring from another physician.  We will put a notice here if we decide to change this policy, but we feel that this will be in effect for the foreseeable future.

Mesquite Pediatrics is proud to be a Reach Out and Read site.  In order to encourage early development and literacy, all patients who come for a well child check between 6 months and 5 years of age will choose a book to take home and read with their parents.  To learn more about this program or to make a donation, click on this link to the Reach Out and Read of Arizona website.
