It's flu vaccination time again! We have received our supplies of both injectable and nasal flu vaccine. There's plenty to go around and it's not too early to get it. We are planning 2 flu vaccine clinics in the next couple of weeks: Wednesday, September 14th (morning and afternoon), and Saturday, September 17th (morning only). In case you were at one of our Saturday flu clinics during the H1N1 flu vaccine craze, this Saturday clinic will be nothing like that. We will not be lining people up to wait 2 hours to get their vaccines. It will be done by appointment and there should not be a significant wait. If neither of these dates work for you, don't worry, we will be adding more flu vaccine clinics over the next several weeks. In case you haven't been in the office since the beginning of May, we have transitioned to electronic medical records. If you haven't been in, there will be new registration paperwork that we will ask you to fill out and WE WILL DEFINITELY NEED YOU TO BRING YOUR INSURANCE CARD. If you want to fill out the paperwork beforehand to save time, you can download it from our website: go to www.mesquitepediatrics.com/registration.htm. We will only need the "Mesquite Pediatrics Contact Sheet". Please make sure you fill it out completely. Even if you have been here recently, please make sure you BRING YOUR INSURANCE CARD! Flu Vaccine is Still Available

This is just a reminder that we have plenty of injectable flu vaccine available for this season. The flu hasn't really started yet, so it's definitely not too late. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age or older this year. We have appointments available almost any day for the rest of this month, even during the after school hours. Flu Vaccine Supply Update

We're sending you this email to update you on our current supply of flu vaccine. At some point today (10/20/2010) we are going to run out of the nasal spray version of the flu vaccine and we do not expect to receive any more this season. So we will only be able to provide the injectable version for the remainder of the year and we have a large supply of that available. If your child is receiving 2 doses of the flu vaccine this year and has already had one dose of the nasal vaccine, it is fine for the second dose to be the injectable form. For those that were hoping to get the nasal spray version, we apologize for running out. We ordered significantly more this year than we have in the past but it has been a very popular option. We just received our first shipment of injectable flu vaccine and will start giving it immediately, including at tomorrow's flu vaccine clinic (September 1). We still have plenty of open appointments for tomorrow, so please call for an appointment if you would like your child to get the flu vaccine. It is not too early! Just as a clarification, our flu clinics this year are BY APPOINTMENT. We will not be doing any walk-in clinics like we did for the H1N1 vaccine last year. Flu Vaccine Season is Here

Though it seems early, flu vaccine season has arrived. We currently have only the nasal spray flu vaccine available but expect to receive the injectable vaccine in the next week or so. We will have our first flu vaccine clinics this Wednesday, September 1 and another on Friday, September 17. We will ONLY be giving the nasal spray vaccine at the first clinic. Most of our patients 2 years of age or older are candidates for this vaccine, but please make sure you read below before calling for your appointment. To be a candidate for the nasal spray flu vaccine, the child must not have any of the following: 1. allergy to eggs 2. under 2 years of age 3. ANY chronic illness (including diabetes or other metabolic disease; any heart, kidney, or neurological condition; asthma that is not very well controlled, any other lung condition; or anemia or other blood disorder) 4. between 2 and 4 years of age with a history of wheezing or asthma in the last 12 months 5. a condition that causes a weakened immune system (HIV/AIDS, cancer treatment, long term steroid therapy) 6. taking anti-viral medications or long term aspirin 7. pregnancy 8. a history of Guillain Barre Syndrome 9. received another live vaccine (MMR or Varicella/Chicken Pox vaccine) in the last month 10. exposure to someone with a severely weakened immune system who must remain in a protected environment like a bone marrow transplant unit It's not too early to get the flu vaccine, so make an appointment now. We'll open up more dates as demand increases. This year's regular flu vaccine (both the nasal and the injectable) have protection from H1N1 flu. Any child under 9 years of age who did not receive 2 doses of H1N1 vaccine last year will need 2 doses of this year's vaccine about 1 month apart to get full immunity from H1N1. We expect that the H1N1 strain will be the most common strain circulating in the community for the next several years. H1N1 Update

We are sending this email because it appears that many of our families think that H1N1 flu is no longer an issue. At Mesquite Pediatrics, we are still recommending and providing the vaccine because the virus is still circulating. We have injectable flu vaccine for children 6 months of age and older and the nasal flu vaccine for children 2 years of age and older. The following is an update on the H1N1 situation and the rationale for our continuing recommendation to get the vaccine. The H1N1 virus is still the predominant strain of influenza circulating in the community. For the latest week reported by the CDC (the week ending January 23rd) there have been 5 pediatric deaths due to influenza. To date, about 1 in 4 people in the U.S. have become sick with the virus and about 1 in 4 have been given the vaccine. This means that about half of the U.S. population could still get this virus. In previous pandemics, there has been a wave of the flu in February and/or March, during the usual flu season. In the 1957-58 pandemic, the pattern of the outbreak was very similar to the pattern that H1N1 has shown this year. It appeared in the late spring, hung around over the summer, created a big outbreak in the fall, and almost seemed to disappear toward the end of the year. Everyone thought the outbreak was over. Then in February and March they experienced the biggest outbreak yet, with the highest number of deaths. Many experts fear this could happen again, though there is no way to be sure at this time. Also in previous pandemics, the new virus has basically replaced the seasonal strains and has then become the strain that circulates again every flu season. So we expect H1N1 to be around for at least the next several years and that it may actually be the only one. The more seasons that a person gets the vaccine, the more effective the vaccine will be and the less likely that person will get sick. So getting the vaccine for your children every year starting now will make it less likely that they will get this flu in the next few years. So, we are still recommending this vaccine to all of our patients. We have appointments available every week, so call us if you would like to get your child in to receive the vaccine. Remember, if your child is under 10 years of age, 2 doses will be needed about 4 weeks apart to get reliable immunity.
