There are two basic types of flu vaccine:  injectable and nasal.  The injectable vaccine is your classic "flu shot" and can be given to anyone 6 months of age or older who does not have a life-threatening allergy to eggs and who has not had a high fever in the previous 24 hours or so.  The nasal flu vaccine can be given to all healthy kids 2 years of age and older who do not have any of the following conditions:

bulletAllergy to eggs, egg proteins, gentamicin, gelatin, or arginine
bulletLife-threatening reaction to influenza vaccine in the past
bulletBetween 2 and 17 years of age and currently receiving aspirin or aspirin-containing therapy
bulletAsthma
bulletBetween 2 and 5 years of age and has been told by a healthcare provider in the past 12 months that he or she has wheezing or asthma
bulletExperienced Guillain-Barre syndrome within 6 weeks following any prior influenza vaccination
bulletLong-term health problems with weakened immune system or heart, lung, liver, kidney, or metabolic desease (e.g. diabetes), or blood disorders
bulletPregnant or nursing
bulletExpect to have close contact within the next 7 days with a person whose immune system is so severely compromised to the degree that he/she must be in a protective environment, such as a negative-pressure hospital room
