Vaccinations for Preventative Care

At Mesquite Pediatrics, we believe that vaccinating our patients may be the most important thing we do. We believe that all children should receive the recommended vaccines according to the guidelines provided by the AAP and the CDC. For more information on vaccinating your children, you can contact Dr. Jeff Couchman, Dr. Susan McMahon, and Dr. Nicole Abdy at Mesquite Pediatrics in Tucson, AZ.

All About Vaccinations

Vaccinations play a crucial role in protecting children from potentially life-threatening diseases, while also contributing to the broader community's health by reducing the spread of contagious illnesses.

This is done through a concept called herd immunity. When a sufficient percentage of a population is immunized against a disease, it becomes difficult for the disease to spread, offering protection to those who can't be immunized (such as those with weakened immune systems or certain medical conditions).

From when they're born to around 6 years of age, your child will need to follow and maintain an immunization schedule. Visit Mesquite Pediatrics in Tucson, AZ to make sure your child is up-to-date on their vaccinations.

How Vaccines Work

Vaccines contain weakened or inactivated forms of antigens (the disease-causing pathogen, or pieces of it). These antigens mimic the presence of the actual pathogen in the body. Once the vaccine is introduced, the body's immune system recognizes the antigens as foreign invaders and triggers a defensive response.

The immune system produces antibodies - proteins specifically designed to neutralize the pathogen. These antibodies help the immune system identify and remember the pathogen if encountered again.

Over time, the immune system builds immunity to the disease without causing illness. If your child is later exposed to the actual pathogen, their immune system will be able to recognize it quickly and can mount a strong defense.
