What To Know About Newborn Care

If you are new to being a parent, it’s natural to have a few questions about caring for your newborn. Our pediatrician has the answers you need. Drs. Jeff Couchman, Susan McMahon, and Nicole Abdy at Mesquite Pediatrics in Tucson, AZ, offer a wide range of medical services for children, including newborn care.

The Facts About Newborn Care

Did you know that your baby’s immune system is not as developed as yours? That means your baby is much more susceptible to illnesses than you are. That’s just one reason why newborn care is so important.

Newborn care starts early, with the first visit happening within just a few days of your baby’s birth. It may occur while both of you are still in the hospital. After the first visit, your baby should have additional visits at 1,2,4,6,9,15, 18, and 24 months.

In addition to newborn care exams, your pediatrician will also administer necessary vaccinations to help protect your baby against serious and contagious illnesses and diseases.

In between newborn care visits, you need to know how to care for your newborn. There are a few helpful tips to keep in mind. Remember to:

  • Feed your newborn every 2 to 3 hours if you are breastfeeding
  • Feed your newborn every 3 to 4 hours if your baby is on formula
  • Let your newborn sleep at least 16 hours in the first weeks
  • Place your newborn on his or her back to sleep, to make breathing easier
  • Bathe your newborn with mild soap and lukewarm water
  • Thoroughly clean the folds of skin where bacteria can thrive
  • Avoid bathing your baby too often to keep your baby’s skin from becoming too dry
